We are seeking a highly-motivated Ph.D. student to join ‘The Balkan-Aegean Dendrochronology Project: Tree-Ring Research for the Study of SE-European and East Mediterranean Civilizations’, funded by the National Science Centre of Poland and based at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun.   The PhD-student will focus on the topic of "Tree-rings and Mediterranean volcanoes: A dendrochemical and micro-structural approach to exploring the impact and dating of volcanism in tree-rings". The PhD-student will actively participate in fieldwork campaigns in SE Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, in laboratory processing of collected material, tree-ring data and historic data, interpretation of that data and development of tree-ring chronologies in collaboration with international specialists. The student will also gain experience of a number of analytical techniques including XRF, wood anatomical training and possible use of ICPMS or SEM which will involve international travel. The successful applicant will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Tomasz Ważny at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and Dr. Charlotte Pearson (Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona in Tucson) as a part of the multidisciplinary team.   Offered: - Standard university scholarship (3,000 PLN monthly including health insurance, not taxable) sufficient to cover living expenses in Poland. - Duration: 5 years. - Attractive scientific topic in an established international team and fully equipped tree-ring laboratory. Required: - Recent MSc degree in wood science, plant biology, archaeology, geology or related fields; - Excellent organizational skills and passion for natural science, history and solving historical puzzles; - Ability to lead  field research in challenging conditions of SE-European and East Mediterranean environments; - Fluency in English; Recommended: - Previous experience with tree-ring analyses. - Previous geoanalytical or wood anatomical experience - Previous experience of work in international teams.   Applicants will send (1) CV including list of scientific achievements and honors resulting from conducted research, and (2) motivation letter (max. 1 page) to both emails of Tomasz Ważny (twazny AT umk.pl) and Charlotte Pearson (c.pearson AT ltrr.arizona.edu).
