Dear colleagues and friends

We have the pleasure to invite you to the 28th European Dendroecological Fieldweek, from September10-17, 2017 in the heart of the beautiful Vosges Mountains in France

This years' fieldweek is organized in close collaboration between the

- Federal Research Institute WSL, Birmensdorf, Switzerland; Kerstin Treydte
- Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology, Institute of Forest Sciences, University of Freiburg, Germany; Hans-Peter Kahle and
- National Institute of Agricultural Research INRA, Nancy, France; Cyrille Rathgeber

We are happy to announce Willy Tegel (University of Freiburg, Germany), Alan Crivellaro (University of Padua, Italy) and Ryszard Kaczka (University ofSilesia, Poland) as additional lecturers.

Furthermore the fieldweek is partly organized as a pre-conference Summer School of the 125th Anniversary Congress of the IUFRO, which will be held from September 19-22, 2017 in Freiburg/Breisgau.

The fieldweek is particularly open for young researchers (beginners, Master and PhD students, Postdocs) but also for advanced scientists from Europe and worldwide from all fields of tree ring research. We will cover the full spectrum of dendrochronological issues, including dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, dendroarcheology and wood anatomy, and foster cross-disciplinary links. Each topic will include keynote lectures, fieldwork and data production/analysis in small groups, supervised by an advanced scientist. Participants will learn methods of field sampling, sample preparation, visual and statistical cross-dating, data production of tree-ring widths, blue reflectance, stable isotopes, cell size parameters, image analysis, statistical data analysis, and presentation. Participants and advanced scientists will spend the whole week together, and there will be ample opportunity to learn, discuss and make new friends from all around the world.

Participation will be limited to a maximum of ca. 32 people, with around 16 slots for IUFRO participants (please register via the IUFRO website, registration will open soon), and around 16 slots for non-IUFRO participants (please download the registration form here:, fill it and email it to kerstin.treydte AT
Since the Fieldweek is also a course of the Oeschger Centre of the University Bern, we can successful participants provide with a certificate of 2.5 ECTS points (ECTS: European Credit Transfer System, 1 ECTS credit equals approx. 25-30 hours of work) which can be handed in at your home University.
The event is supported by the Association of Tree Ring ResearcATR ( that provides a limited number of grants.

Do not hesitate to contact us in case of any questions.
Please feel free to forward this information to anyone you think might be interested.

We are looking forward to meeting you in the Vosges Mountains!
